Races of the Week:
The Transrockies 6 day Stage Race and the Ultra Trail Du Mont Blanc were held and finished up this past weekend.

Some notable Canadian performances included Gary Robbins and Tamsin Anstey who won the open mixed category. Also having great races were the team of Adam Campbell/Aaron Heidt finishing 3rd in the men's open category, just ahead of fellow Canadians Phil Villeneuve and Gavin Hamilton. Complete results.

The UTMB 165km is THE ultra in Europe. Krissy Moehl had a great run to win the womens race, while finishing 11th overall. Spanish running sensation Kilian Jornet had a decisive victory in the mens race. American ultra running legend Scott Jurek was running in the top three early on, but faded in the later stages to finish in 19th place overall. Complete results.

Erik Skaggs:
I mentioned last week about Erik Skaggs breaking the course record at Where's Waldo 100km. Well, it seems as though Erik has gone through a pretty rough patch since then and suffered renal failure/kidney issues. At last report, Erik is still in the hospital but without medical insurance. Best wishes for an exciting trip to Ecuador for my sister Debbie McKeown and her husband Jack. They will be trekking in the Amazon and Andes. Can't wait to hear the details when they return. Deb and Jack are true adventurers, having travelled, trekked and climbed in a bazillion different countries. We are fortunate to be able to swap gear, stories and photos with them. Check out Deb's website at djmckeown.com.

Training Summary for the week:
~ I had some good recovery runs after after my previous big week. My IT band was pretty tight earlier in the week from the freak bee sting on my quad that swelled and stiffened up my ITB, but things improved each day and felt great during my long run on Sunday. I ran 4:14 to finish the week on Sunday and felt like it was a short run. That's a nice way to finish a training period. It was also a great test run for Haliburton with the gear/nutrition I am going to be using. I ended my run on Sunday and had thoughts of having to be out there for a while longer though as there were some kids who got lost on the trails at Frontenac. I started back out running again to help look for them, but luckily they were found quickly. The taper starts to get a little more aggressive now...which I don't really enjoy. Oh well...all for the greater good.

  1. Another Solid week - + 15 hrs on a taper - your killing me.

So is the Mont Blanc or Transrockies on your radar, after you are finished playing in the snow?

Do your best to stay sane during the next two weeks. Looking forward to sharing the ride with you.

Glad they found the two boys....

  2. I would really love to do both UTMB and Transrockies. Sara and I keep talking about wanting to get to Colorado, so that might potentially happen sooner. We'll see.

I struggle with tapers. Not looking forward to it, especially with the great running weather now. I'll try to be good though and get to the start line fresh. Thanks again!

It was actually two girls and a dog that were lost. They took the wrong trail and didn't have a map, but at least they were smart enough to start making their way towards the trail centre.
